Was vote-fixing used in the 2004 US Presidential Elections?

Essays about politics, circa 2004 by Robert Alcock

I'm an American citizen, through no fault of my own. Even though I haven't lived there since 1996, it gives me no pleasure to watch the country decay towards fascism. So in 2004, in between finishing my PhD and organizing a conference on sustainability, I found time to follow and support the Presidential campaign of Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH).

Dennis, you may remember, was the only candidate who actually voted against the Iraq War and the Patriot Act. He's that rarest of birds, a politician who actually acts on principle. Even though he didn't win the Democratic nomination, his ideas and campaign have, I think, influenced the race to a significant extent. For one thing, John Edwards probably wouldn't have come second in the primaries -- and scored the VP nomination -- had it not been for Dennis's early, tactical support in the Iowa primary back in January. And even with a measly 2 delegates to the drafting convention, Dennis's supporters still managed to sway the language of the Democratic Party Platform towards withdrawing troops from Iraq. More importantly, I think the campaign galvanized "progressive" people in an increasingly right-wing, corporate-dominated political landscape.

Anyway, for anyone who may be interested, here is an archive of the pieces I wrote about the 2004 Kucinich presidential campaign. You might like to start with Welcome to the Department of Peace

There's also a piece about the dramatic events of March 2004 in Spain, where, in the space of a week, the country lived through the worst massacre since the early years of Franco's regime, official cover-ups and revelations, massive street demonstrations, a general election and a long-awaited change of government. When the global history of the early 21st century is written, I think that this will be seen as a turning point.
